The Regiment was formed in 1900 as 9 Brigade Royal Field Artillery. 9 Field Brigade was re-organised in May 1938 as 9 Field Regiment RA on a two battery basis. In January 1941 it was re-organised as three batteries. Post war 9 Field Regiment RA became 23 Field Regiment RA in April 1947.
