The unit was formed in February 1920 as 1 West Lancashire Brigade Royal Field Artillery (TF) at Liverpool. The Brigade was formed with 1 to 3 Lancashire Batteries from the Brigade and 4 Lancashire Battery formed and added. It became 87 (1st West Lancashire) Brigade RFA (TA) in 1921. The Brigade changed title again in June 1924 to 87 (1st West Lancashire) Field Brigade Royal Artillery (TA). 87 Field Brigade was re-designated 87 (1st West Lancashire) Field Regiment RA (TA) in November 1938 with two batteries. In February 1941 a third battery was formed. Post war 87 (1st West Lancashire) Field Regiment RA (TA) went into suspended animation in December 1945 and was re-constituted as 287 (1st West Lancashire) Field Regiment RA (TA) in January 1947.
