174 Field Regiment RA was formed from 8 Defence Regiment RA in January 1942 at Neswick Hall, Driffield with three batteries. The Regiment joined 55 Infantry Division which was a Home Defence Division. Originally in Northern Command, they moved to South Western District at the beginning of 1943. The batteries went to an independent role in January 1943. RHQ of 174 Field Regiment RA was disbanded in March 1943, personnel used to form RHQ 52 Heavy Regiment.
