164 Field Regiment RA was formed as X Field Regiment RA in June 1942 with two batteries by the re-designation of RHQ 79 Anti-Tank Regiment. The batteries were taken from 97 (Kent Yeomanry) Field Regiment (470 Battery) and 157 Field Regiment (515 Battery). Within two weeks it was re-designated as 164 Field Regiment RA. RHQ and 515 Battery were disbanded in August 1942 in the Middle East. 470 Battery was placed in suspended animation.
