1st AGRA was the first artillery group formation created within the Royal Artillery. It was formed in late August 1942, although it officially came to be on 1st September 1942, with its HQ in Burnbank, near Glasgow.
In its initial formation, it consisted of 107th, 141st & 166th Field Regiments, 4th, 5th & 58th Medium Regiments, as well as the 54th Heavy Regiment.
In early 1943, it was called up to support the British 1st Army in Tunisia, where it supported the Free French forces with distinction. It then was called up to Italy in late 1943 and served in this theatre until the end of the war, supporting both the US 5th Army and British 8th Army when and where it was required.
