54 Anti-Aircraft Brigade was raised in September 1939 at Sutton Coldfield in the Midlands. It was initially a Searchlight Brigade covering the Midlands and West Lanashire. It served in 4 Anti-Aircraft Division until November 1940 when it transferred to the newly formed 11 Anti-Aircraft Division. By mid 1942 the Brigade started to receive Light Anti-Aircraft units as well as the searchlights.
In October 1942, 54 Anti-Aircraft Brigade came under 4 Anti-Aircraft Group covering the North West and North Wales. It disbanded in November 1943. When the TA was re-organised in 1947 a new 54 Brigade was created by re-numbering 28 AA Brigade. The original 54 AA Brigade was re-numbered 80 AA Brigade.
