49 (The West Yorkshire Regiment) Searchlight Regiment RA (TA) formed in August 1940 by the transfer of 49 (The West Yorkshire Regiment) Anti-Aircraft Battalion Royal Engineers (TA) to the RA. The Regiment served in Anti-Aircraft Command in West Yorkshire until being converted to a Garrison Regiment. As part of 50 AA Brigade, the Regiment was earmarked and trained for operations in Normandy. In the event the Searchlight Regiments were not required and remained in the UK. 49 (The West Yorkshire Regiment) Searchlight Regiment RA (TA) was converted to 49 Garrison Regiment RA in November 1944 and re-organised as 601 Infantry Regiment RA in February 1945. It was re-constituted as 584 (The West Yorkshire Regiment) Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment RA (TA) in January 1947.
