Air Observation Post Squadrons Royal Air Force although belonging to the RAF, were manned mostly by the RA. The pilots were all artillerymen as were most of the ground crews. The RAF supplied the technical ground staff and were responsible for the repair and maintenance of the aircraft. The aircraft used throughout was the Auster in various marks although other aircraft were sometimes used.
