The Regiment was formed to provide defence for Hong Kong and Singapore by recruiting Punjabi and Sikh volunteers. Only the best were taken although by the time of World War 2, a shortage of manpower meant standards had to be lowered a little and membership extended to other Hindu classes. The regiment had a mixture of Indian and European NCO’s and Officers.
